TMJ
Correct Jaw Pain Caused by Temporamandibular Disorder
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your lower jaw to your skull and controls jaw function, like chewing. If the joint is painful, you may have temporamandibular disorder (TMD). Some of the causes are stress, repeated clenching of the jaw muscles, or teeth grinding.
Some of the symptoms of TMD are:
- Pain when opening or closing your mouth
- Trouble chewing
- Jaw becoming stuck open or shut
- Headaches or ear pain
- Clicking or popping sounds when opening your mouth
- Teeth grinding
Teeth grinding is especially problematic because it can wear down the enamel on your teeth, making them more susceptible to decay.
If you suspect you may have TMD, come in for a consultation. Dr. Seini can help provide relief for your symptoms by prescribing pain relievers and hot/cold compresses. Long term solutions include behavioral changes or a night guard – to prevent or lessen the effects of teeth grinding. Surgery is rarely required, except in severe cases.
